This course will focus on helping students to understand how to resolve disputes without trial. The course will explore mediation, arbitration, negotiation and other dispute resolution processes. The course will be interactive and experiential requiring students to participate in role plays, exercises and presentations involving dispute resolution problems and techniques. The course will also focus on the role of language and culture in resolving disputes. The professors welcome students with writing skills at all levels. The grade will be based on class participation (10%), group presentation (10%) and individual presentation (20%), document drafting assignments (two at 10% each) and a final paper (40%). Course materials will include a textbook and a course supplement. This course will satisfy the upper level writing requirement. This is a third year priority class with an enrollment limit of 12.
